Whonix - Definition from the Hotspot Shield Encyclopedia

Whonix is an operating system that is geared towards providing privacy, security and anonymity, specifically during online interactions.

The operating system is based on the Debian OS and uses virtual machines that run both a workstation and a Tor gateway. The workstation provides the actual working area and functional part of the OS and is where user applications can be installed and used, while the Tor Gateway provides the security and anonymity. Whonix has a non-amnesic design that is both beneficial for entering the Tor Network, but could provide potential areas of exploit for attackers. The source code of the Debian OS has been heavily modified but this level of configuration allows for the advanced security measures.
