Web brigades - Definition from the Hotspot Shield Glossary
The Web Brigade is a supposed state-backed group of individuals who are employed to promote Vladimir Putin, and pro-Putin sentiments and pro-Russian viewpoints.
The rise of web brigades started in the 2000’s - A huge swing in the views and sentiments of the online Russian population concerning governments and politics arose around this time. Before the web brigades, the public’s view generally supported democracy and liberty, whereas from the year 2000 onwards, an increasingly totalitarian view was noted. Hacking groups have uncovered various documents where the Russian government has actively paid journalists and members of the public to write pro-government blog posts and comments in order to give a positive impression of Russia and its policies. This method of censorship and control is seen as highly negative and deceptive by other nations of the world.
