RootStock is a peer to peer platform that facilitates the creation of smart contracts.

The platform is built ontop of the Bitcoin Blockchain and aims to add additional functionality and sidechains to the core Bitcoin network.

Bitcoin does not have smart contract functionality, so RootStock (Or RSK) looks to address this problem and provide support and development to Bitcoin for smart contracts. RootStock features a high level of security and can prevent double spending, offers scalability, and also an instant payment system, its blocks can also be created in around 10 second intervals. While other cryptocurrencies seek to supplant Bitcoin and become the major digital currency, RootStock aims to coincide with Bitcoin and promotes it as the main cryptocurrency of choice.
