OpenWRT - Definition from the Hotspot Shield Glossary

This is a Linux based distribution for routing - When installed you can take advantage of the package manager that allows you to install various programs from an open software repository.

Similar to DD-WRT, OpenWRT aims to add increased functionality and control over network routers. OpenWRT’s basic operation is to function as a route but it can be used for SSH Server implementation and SSH Tunneling, Setting up a VPN Network, running server software, creating guest networks and installing things like BitTorrent Clients.

OpenWRT can be used via a web interface or a command line terminal - The web interface provides ease of use for those not comfortable entering lines of code etc.
