This day was established to boycott the web-hosting and domain name provider GoDaddy due to their support of the controversial “Stop Online Piracy Act” which was seen to severely reduce an individual’s human rights and freedom of speech etc. on the internet.
The day has happened annually since 2011 and during this day people are encouraged to transfer their domains from GoDaddy to other web hosting businesses. The business Namecheap capitalized on this day and offered domain name discounts to entice customers to transfer their domains over - On the first year it was reported that GoDaddy lost around 16,000 domains, however as they greatly changed their policies and customer service regarding the Act, they actually gained more domains than they lost. In later years the day has lost popularity ad GoDaddy continually seeks to improve its image and services.
