Metro Ethernet - Definition from the Hotspot Shield Glossary

Metro (Metropolitan) Ethernet concerns MAN’s (Metropolitan Area Networks) and using Ethernet carrier technology to connect networks together. Businesses using Local Area Networks, individuals wanting to connect to Wide Area Networks or the internet and corporations and establishments wanting to connect different branches together to an intranet can all use Metro Ethernet.

Metro Ethernet systems will usually employ a star topology where individual servers and routers will be connected using standard cabling or fiber optic media. Metro Ethernet is considered less expensive in comparison to other types of connecting technology and is widely used for connecting to the internet and to bring together geographically diverse corporations.
