ICloud leaks of celebrity photos - Definition from the Hotspot Shield Glossary

This huge leak happened in 2014 and contained around 500 photos of various female celebrities, many of which contained nudity. The images were initially released on the 4chan forum and then distributed to other outlets including social media, Imgur and Reddit.

The images were initially thought to be obtained through a security breach in the iCloud suite distributed by Apple, but it was later discovered that is was instead a security flaw in the iCloud Application programming Interface that allowed the hackers to continually guess a user’s password without locking the account. The leak gained widespread exposure through the media, many of the celebrities affected pleased to the public not to view the photos and to respect their privacy, and it also prompted an investigation from the FBI.
