Global Network Initiative - Definition from the Hotspot Shield Glossary

The GNI is a global organization that aims to prevent internet censorship and maintain a standard of privacy for all individuals who use it. The initiative is backed by a large range of corporations, universities and non-profit organizations including Human Rights First, Microsoft, Yahoo, Google and Internews.

The main aim of the Global Network Initiative is to protect the human rights and privacy of the internet using public, and this is achieved by cooperation from the participating parties and by the promotion of new laws and policies that aid the cause. The initiative is based on actual human rights laws that are internationally recognized and such standards as the ICCPR (International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights).
