Cyber spying - Definition from the Hotspot Shield Glossary

Cyber Spying is the process of gathering information on an individual or business electronically without prior express consent; in most cases cyber spying will be carried out without the affected party even being aware of the illicit activity.

Cyber Spying can be carried out using a wide range of techniques, software and hacks and there are many individuals and groups who use such attacks for their own personal gain. The information gathered may be sensitive information such as passwords, email addresses or even credit card details; alternatively, less sensitive information could be gathered to aid in creating more effective marketing strategies or targeted add campaigns. Cyber spying has been known to take place at many levels, including state level where governments have actively spied on other countries online activities.
