Cyber-dissident - Definition from the Hotspot Shield Glossary
A Cyber-Dissident is someone who posts media on the internet that criticizes a particular government or regime. Dissidents may have a particular political view, or be outspoken against a certain regime they feel is working against the public for example.
They will mainly be professional journalists and use the internet as a medium to spread their word and journalism to try and push public opinion against this regime or government. Sometimes Cyber-Dissidents will use their real name and credentials, whereas in countries where censorship is employed, they may make anonymous posts to protect themselves. There have been numerous international incidents where Cyber-Dissidents have been arrested for their outspoken articles that portray governments and dictatorships in a negative light.
