Cryptocat - Definition from the Hotspot Shield Encyclopedia
This is a form of online chat program that allows users to engage in secure, encrypted online chats with their friends and other users.
The app was created in 2011 originally as a web application by Nadmi Kobeissi. The chat program uses end-to-end encryption for security and many other features aimed to prevent attacks and to help authentication methods. Since its development, Cryptocat has undergone many changes to improve it security and authentication and as of 2016 the messaging service is available as a desktop software application. The application has received much praise and is listed on the EFF’s “Secure messaging scorecard”, any negative press the developers received was acted upon and used to improve the apps security and features.
