Censorship of Twitter - Definition from the Hotspot Shield Glossary
Twitter actively helps governments censor certain tweets - If a complaint is raised against a certain account or string of tweets, Twitter will help to censor that user or block people from viewing those tweets in the corresponding company. Much like YouTube, as Twitter is such a powerful and widely available social media platform, governments actively censor it and aim to remove any tweets that they deem to be inappropriate or instigating civil unrest for example. While countries like Egypt, France, India and Russia have all practiced the censorship or Twitter to some degree, North Korea, China and Iran fully block the website and its use.
The censorship of Twitter is a highly debated topic - the majority of the public feel that this censorship goes against our rights of freedom of speech, while others believe it is necessary to reduce the spread of terrorism.
