With company security breaches occurring more often, there has been an increase of reported identity theft and fraud. An AT&T Hacker named Andrew Auernheimer, also known as “Weev”, was recently sentenced to 3+ years in jail for hacking into the company’s website and leaking 114,000 iPad user emails. Not only will he serve jail time, but he will also have to pay over $73,000 in restitution to AT&T and serve three years of probation.
To prevent identity theft, be cautious when sharing personal information online. Change your password every few months. Don’t open suspicious emails as they could contain malware. And always use a VPN, like Hotspot Shield on your computer, smartphone and tablet to protect yourself from malicious hackers like “Weev”.
