By Praveen Kannan and Anna Strokolyst The Hotspot Shield team believes the internet should be open and secure …
It’s been a big few weeks at AnchorFree. Our Hotspot Shield application has recently crested 650 million downloads—a number that is growing by over 250,000 per day. We also closed $295 million in funding to help us reach a billion users in the near future. And now, we’ve been listed on Inc. Magazine’s “Inc. 5000,” highlighting the fastest-growing private companies in the United States.
This isn’t the first time we’ve been featured by Inc. We made the list both in 2013 and 2014, so it’s especially gratifying to still be showing exceptional growth. In the last three years, Inc. highlights our 193% growth. During this time, we’ve expanded our team and hired some of the brightest minds in the business to continue keeping our users’ information secure, private, and to enable access to information around the world.
Our growth has been fueled by an unprecedented number of data breaches (Target, Equifax, Yahoo, just to name a few), as well as online privacy scandals like Facebook. People are now seeking tools to better protect themselves, and they’re taking security and privacy into their own hands.
We’ve also seen an increase in global censorship. In many parts of the world, our freedom of information is under threat and users are looking for new ways to retain access to channels like social media and various websites. With net neutrality being scrapped in the U.S. and countries in the Middle East continuously blocking content, Hotspot Shield has seen a huge boost in downloads—a trend that is only rising further.
People, no matter where they live, have the right to secure and private access to the world’s information. The tools we build provide that, and we’re thrilled to be recognized by Inc. Magazine for 2018. And one thing’s for certain: we aren’t letting up. Over the next few years, billions of people will move from feature phones to smartphones—and these people will all need their devices protected. We will continue pushing to ultimately help every person on the planet.
