UT-VPN - Definition from the Hotspot Shield Glossary

University of Tsukuba Virtual Private Network is an open-source application used to implement Virtual Private Network connections. The application was developed by Daiyuu Nobori and the SoftEther Corporation and uses SSL/TLS security to encrypt data and is also capable of passing through firewalls and NAT’s.

Authentication is provided via simple username & password methods, while encryption is formed using OpenSSL and the actual VPN functions as an L2-VPN over SSL/TLS. Both client and server versions of UT-VPN are available and are both supported on many platforms including Windows (98 onwards), Unix (Linux 2.4 onwards), Mac OS (Tiger onwards) and Solaris (8.0 onwards).
