Project Shield - Definition from the Hotspot Shield Glossary

This project is a service developed by Google to aid in businesses resisting DDoS attacks (Distributed Denial of Service). As the number of DDoS attacks has seen an increase in recent years, and is affecting a wider range of smaller businesses, Google saw fit to create project shield to help these businesses - Not every business with an online presence will have the know-how or the funds to effectively repel attacks of this magnitude, and in most cases, the attacks are simply executed for fun or out of spite.

Project Shield has the user use Google’s own name servers which mean that traffic is routed through Google’s reverse proxy servers that identify and malicious content and filter it out.
