Movieland - Definition from the Hotspot Shield Glossary

Movieland was a subscription based film downloading service created in 2005. This software has been the subject of much controversy due to its illicit actions and requests for payment when users have not even signed up to the service. Many complaints surfaced about Movieland in 2006 and it was found out that the media player that users had to install to watch Movieland content actually performed many other activities that were not disclosed such as modifying other software.

The main premise of the Movieland scam was to unwittingly entice the user into installing their “free trial” and due to a small note in their terms and conditions; the user would have to pay for the software if they did not cancel the trial before its term ended. Several lengthy lawsuits resulted from the Movieland saga and although Movieland did not admit any illegal actions, they had to make two substantial payouts.
