This is a national intranet service that is implemented by the government of North Korea and has been in operation since the year 2000. Kwangmyong can be accessed by internet browsers, email services, news groups and a dedicated search engine.
The websites contained within the intranet use DNS and can be accessed directly via entering the URL or IP address. Specific areas of Kwangmyong include information websites on politics, culture, science, domestic news and academic facilities for schools and universities. Any website or piece of information uploaded to Kwangmyong is vetted by the government and a strict policy of censorship is maintained on any for of media outside the national intranet.
