.bit - Definition from the Hotspot Shield Encyclopedia

This is a domain name extension that is a top-level domain and is not approved by the ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers).

The .bit domain is widely used with Bitcoin and cryptocurrency services and websites. The domain names are served via a namecoin infrastructure which acts as an alternative to a DNS server that would usually be used for sanctioned domain names. The .bit domain requires a copy of the namecoin blockchain, a web browser plug-in or a DNS server that supports it in order to be used. In 2014, Mozilla released a plug-in for its Firefox browser that aimed to automate the process and allow for .bit domains to be automatically resolved.
