VPNs and remote desktops: What’s the difference?

The best Internet security VPN

What do you think is the difference between an Internet security VPN and remote desktop protocol (RDP)? In this post, we’ll briefly explain what an Internet security VPN is, what RDP is, and how they differ from each other.

What is an Internet security VPN?

An Internet security VPN refers to a private network of computers that is extended over a public network such as the Internet to allow users to interact with it as if they’re part of it. There are two basic types of VPNs: site-to-site VPN and remote access VPN.

Site-to-site VPN allows a user to establish a secure connection with multiple other users over a public network. This allows each endpoint user to access all the resources of everyone they are connected to. This feature makes site-to-site VPNs popular among enterprises.

Remote access VPN, on the other hand, allows users to connect to a computer network in a remote location, making it seem like they are a part of that remote location. For example, if a computer from Brazil connects to a remote location in Canada, that computer will appear on Canadian servers as if that computer is actually based in Canada. This in turn allows the said computers to access all online content available to Canada, even if they are not normally accessible in Brazil.

These differences aside, VPNs offer improved security and anonymity because all established connections are encrypted. This protects all traffic from being intercepted or sniffed by online crooks.

What is the RDP?

Developed by Microsoft, the RDP is a protocol that enables users to access and manage desktops remotely. For example, if a user wishes to access their work computer at home, they can use RDP to do so. With an RDP system, it’s possible to access a remote desktop and interact with its UI without being physically present in the same location as the desktop.

Similar to VPNs, RDP uses encryption to protect all data sent between devices. Additional features of RDP include smart card authentication and support for up to 64,000 communication channels for data.

VPN or RDP?

Many users might think that VPNs and RDP systems are the same. While the two are similar in that they both use encryption to protect their data, they are not really the same in terms of their primary functions.

VPNs are typically used for accessing region-locked or locally blocked content, for encrypting online traffic, and for staying anonymous online, among notable examples. RDP systems, on the other hand, are used mostly for managing remote devices. It is possible to use both at the same time, though.
