The Nintendo Switch signals a new era for the iconic video game company, with revolutionary features and partnerships with other video game developers in tow – which is why gaming fans can’t wait to get their hands on one. There is one issue that is making a lot of fans think twice about buying it however: regional pricing.
To help you compare Nintendo Switch prices by region, here is a table detailing the suggested retail price (SRP) for each region on launch day, as well as the US$ equivalent and the price increase compared to US prices. The numbers shown are as of February 2017.
Country | Local SRP | US$ Equivalent | Price increase vs. US price |
Japan | ¥29,980 | $262.50 | -12% |
United States | $299 | $299 | 0% |
Australia | AU$469.95 | $351.10 | 17.4% |
United Kingdom | £279.99 | $337.30 | 12% |
Canada | $399 | $302.74 | 1.3% |
New Zealand | $549.00 | $389.65 | 30.3% |
Europe | €329.99 | $350.05 | 17% |
Singapore | SG$659 | $468.50 | 56.7% |
Malaysia | RM2,299 | $517.79 | 73.2% |
Do note that in the Singaporean and Malaysian markets, the price is for a bundled set that includes the games The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and 1-2 Switch in addition to the console and out-of-the-box accessories. Also, in Malaysia, the SRP is for the all-gray version only; if customers want the version with the neon-red and neon-blue Joy-Cons, they will have to cough up an additional RM100. No console-only packages were available in both countries at the time of writing.
Nintendo has a history of restricting its devices to regions they are sold to. Such is the case with the GameCube, Wii, Nintendo DSi, Wii U, and the Wii U GamePad. Even the Nintendo 3DS employs regional restrictions for games. Units restricted to the PAL region, for example, were only compatible with games sold in the same region.
The Nintendo Switch is region-free, though, which means that there will be no compatibility issues in terms of games and software. With this, you will be able to buy a unit from an online retailer outside where you live without having to worry about compatibility issues.
If you want to get your hands on the Nintendo Switch but think that the SRP is a bit expensive where you live, the best that you can do is order online while using an Internet security VPN, as doing so will help you save more money, shipping fees included.
