4 Tips to Take Advantage of the Netflix Spain Launch

On October 20, 2015, Netflix launched its streaming service in Spain for eight euros per month. The Spain launch is part of a wave of expansion for Netlifx, which also debuted in Asia recently with its Japan launch in September 2015. Netflix’s Spain debut was the first of three consecutive European launches — the Portugal launch took place on October 21, followed by the Italy launch on the 22nd. The expansion is calculated to help Netflix realize its goal of operating in 200 countries by 2017, potentially quadrupling its global presence from 2015.

Typically, Netflix only launches new locations with about 1,000 titles. For example, Netflix will not offer “House of Cards” initially in Spain because local TV networks have already secured the rights. By the same token, Netflix will offer some content in Spain that you can’t access from other countries. Or can you? Whether you’re among Netflix’s 42 million U.S. subscribers or 23 million international customers, you can use Hotspot Shield to unlock content available in other countries with these four tips.

Figure out What’s Missing in Your Area

No matter where you are, Netflix has geographical restrictions on the content you can access. These restrictions arise when Netflix has preexisting geographical licensing agreements with movie studios or local broadcasters. The unavailability of two of Netflix’s hottest original series — “Orange Is the New Black” and “House of Cards” — in Spain is a function of licensing conflicts, for example.

Fortunately, thanks to virtual private networks (VPNs), you’re no longer hamstrung by your geographic location when accessing streaming video. As long as Netflix hosts the content you want in some country in the world, you can use a work around to hide the origin of your IP address and access any video you choose.

Download the Hotspot Shield App for Your Device

As long as you have an active Netflix account and an Internet connection, you’re minutes away from accessing the content of any country. With the Hotspot Shield app, you can disguise your IP address to make Netflix think you’re browsing from another country. You can then circumvent any geographic restrictions associated with the country from which you’re actually browsing. The first step is downloading our app available on iOS, Android, Windows Phone and desktop, Mac or as your browser extension (Chrome or Firefox). Select Your Browsing Location with the App

Open up the Hotspot Shield App on your phone, tablet, or PC. Next, select where you’d like to access content. For example, if you’re in Spain and want to see what Alex and Piper are up to in this season of “Orange is the New Black,” simply change your location to the U.S.

If you upgrade to Hotspot Shield Elite, you’ll have your choice of more than 15 countries (Virtual Locations), giving you unfettered access to their available Netflix content. Our free version comes with the U.S. location set as default. Once you’ve selected your location, you may verify your IP address is set to the correct country. Make sure you clear your browser’s cache and cookies before proceeding.

Open Netflix to Start Watching Your Favorite Shows and Movies

The last step is to sign in to your existing Netflix account or sign up for one if you’re a new customer. Once you do, you’ll see all the TV series and movies that are restricted in your country.

For example, if you live in the U.S., you won’t be able to stream the neo-noir Keanu Reeves thriller “John Wick.” Without Hotspot Shield, if you want to watch it, you either have to live in Spain or pay to rent it online in the U.S. With Hotspot Shield VPN, you simply switch your geolocation to Spain, and you can stream the movie instantly without any additional charge as long as you have a Netflix account. Critics have called “John Wick” Keanu’s best since the Matrix, so that title alone makes our app worth downloading. With the Hotspot Shield app, getting around any potential restrictions is as easy as setting your browsing location to an unrestricted European country.

For die-hard TV fans and movie buffs, missing out on spectacular content simply because of where you live just won’t do. Netflix continues to expand to more and more countries, and, with Hotspot Shield, that means more and more viewing options for VPN-equipped subscribers.
