Internet police - Definition from the Hotspot Shield Glossary

The internet police is a slang term that is used to denote an organization or department that attempts to police the public’s activity on the internet. In slang terms, internet police is used as a derogatory term for people who attempt to police the internet; however there are actually many government organizations that have been created for this purpose. Policing of the internet can include censorship to prevent people visiting sites the government deems inappropriate, tracking down criminal activities, trying to push a particular opinion on the public or even just general propaganda. Internet policing has mixed reception as with censorship - There are those of us who believe it goes against the basic rights of freedom, and there are those who believe it is a government’s duty to police the internet for the benefit of the public.
