The Free Haven Project was developed to provide an anonymous and distributed system of storage and led to the development of the Tor Network.
The project was created by students from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in 1999. The original system was designed to give users a private storage system that was also secure. The system uses a peer to peer network and a series of relays and nodes to distribute data so that the contents of one single file cannot be identified. A public key is used to access and store files and to improve security, the file location is changed regularly from node to node. Communication is possible between operators of the nodes and system using anonymous emails and messaging.
