This is a method of telecommunication that uses packet-switching to transmit data between a LAN (Local Area Network) and a WAN (Wide Area Network).
The system was designed to be cost-efficient and fast and was historically widely used by major telecommunication companies. A main concept of Frame Relay is that the data is not checked for errors until it reaches the endpoint in the transmission - This greatly speeds up the process, furthermore the packet sizes of Frame Relay can vary greatly unlike the fixed packet transmission of X.25. Frame Relay technology has been offered by many ISP’s such as Verizon mainly in conjunction with T-1 lines or anything above the standard ISDN connection. The Frame Relay system is based on the X.25 protocol and like X.25 is being phased out by many businesses in favor of newer developments.
