Bitmessage and is a communications protocol and messaging service that is peer to peer and encrypted. It is used to send encrypted and private messages between subscribers.

The messages are encrypted using public-key cryptography and then mixes the message in other users inboxes to make it difficult to trace. The main clients for Bitmessage are PyBitmessage and Bitpost client. specifically provides an email service for Bitmessage that allows the encrypted messages to be sent using standard email protocols. Bitmessage has seen a surge in usage after revelations appeared in the news about the NSA’s surveillance operations in 2013. The communications protocol was developed in 2012 and is available on Windows, Mac OS, Linux and FreeBSD.
